This time when touchscreens were way overrated, an ordinary looking candy bar mobile phone with the usual-looking keypad is a sigh of relief. An addition to Nokia’s N-series, the N79 a mid-range phone that are sensible enough for the common user.

Laden with a very pleasing external and offering a comfortable grip, the Nokia N79 measures 110mm x 49mm x 15mm and weighs 97 grams. It features a flat number pad to give space to 2.4-in screen with clear and bright 320 x 240 pixels resolution. The screen is good enough to make us appreciate its multimedia offerings. The screen is also equipped with an accelerometer that responds accordingly to every turn of the hand.

Shortcut buttons are situated between the screen and the number pad. A Nokia Multimedia Key is located on the far left, just like the other N-series phones, which will takes its users to a revolving menu of multimedia offerings like Internet, music, photos, and gaming. The Navi wheel is reminiscent of the iPod’s scrolling capability, but not as responsive yet still works well, and you can enable/disable this function. There is also a slider on the top edge of the handset that locks and unlocks the phone.

Customize N97′s shell among three Xpress-on back plates choices (brown, lime green and blue), although you can only replace the back, with the front portion remains at white. No problems with this though, because the front and back’s theme will definitely match.

Connectivity options in the N79 include 3G with HSDPA with download speeds to 3.6Mbps and Wi-Fi. It supports quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE. Two-way video calling is possible with the N79, with its front camera and a 5MP main camera equipped with Carl Zeiss lens on the rear. It has a dual LED flash auto focus and a macro mode that helps take the best indoor shoots. Overall image quality is good, although capturing moving images is a little tricky because of high shutter lag.

Music is a high point in the N79. It has stereo speakers located on the upper and lower right edge of the phone that produce nice and loud sounds. A 3.5mm headset jack is located on the top edge of the phone. Listen to music for ten straight hours and the battery can deal with it.

It is equipped with 50MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot that can handle a 4GB card for your files. It has FM radio and an FM transmitter and support for Nokia Music Store. You can also download games with this, being a N-gage phone.

Another wow factor in the N79 is the built-in GPS receiver and pre-installed Nokia Maps that works well with the accelerometer. Other productivity tools include calculator, calendar, PDF reader, unit converter, notes taker and QuickOffice for reading Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

Another monumental piece in the line of mobile phones under the NSeries is the Nokia N77, among the only few mobile phones that has a commendable mobile TV function. This phone was released in 2007, supporting GSM 900/ 1800/ 1900 and WCDMA 2100 networks. This smartphone’s additional multimedia capability has let business persons and casual users the chance to enjoy viewing mobile broadcast content and accessing interactive services.

The Nokia N77 sports a dimension of 111 x 50 x 18.8 millimeters and weight of 114 grams. Its large 2.4 inches high-color and resolution QVGA screen displays texts and images in good color and brightness and it automatically adjusts according to environmental conditions. It presents high-quality viewing of broadcasts and videos to users.

The phone is also easy to grip, thanks to its candy-bar type design. It also features a 2.0-Megapixel camera that can take pictures in a 1600 x 1200 pixel-resolution. A built-in flash is included, with 16X zoom and can also be used for video recording and video calling.

What made N77 special is the mobile TV, supporting DVB-H broadcasts. Dedicated TV control buttons are also included, with program guide and live TV recording. Of course, the penultimate media features like the music player is still embedded in the N77 technology and with help of a high-quality stereo sound, music in MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA formats will be heard at their best. Those who are aiming for a more private listening can opt to choose the 3.5mm jack, allowing standard headphones to be connected as well.

Nokia N77 has a dedicated TV key that allows users to access the DVB-H TV. Here are the things that users can do with the N77: remember the last channel viewed before switching off the TV, set reminders to alert the start of a program, 30 seconds replay, view program information up to seven days through the program guide, browse TV channels, and purchase new channels. Other features of the N77 include hands free speaker, push-to-talk over cellular, still image editor, syncML, themes and the visual radio

N77 has been incorporated with 20.0 MB memory although users can easily beef it up to 2.0 GB with external memory with microSD memory cards. The N77 runs on the Symbian S60 OS and supports tri-band GSM and 3G, which allows the user to engage on video calls. The USB and Pop port allows the user to connect the N77 to the PC. Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE are also available. It shows that no matter how Nokia’s multimedia capabilities have catapulted an ultimate high in N77 it shows that the basics remains at best, with regards to phone and e-mail functions.

The Nokia E62 has been considered as one of the most powerful in the Nokia E Series. While users have started debating the gadget’s bias to corporate users, Nokia E62 is a smartphone that gained its reputation as a very dependable gadget for everyone. Some have even compared the E62 to Motorola Q and the RIM BlackBerry 8700.

This smart phone boasts a dimension of 4.6 x 2.7 x 0.5 inches and a weight of 5 ounces, sporting a wider and blockier body. The 2.8-inch screen has 16-million color output at a 320 x 240 pixels resolution. Text messages, images and videos look great in the large and bright screen, even in direct sunlight. Below the screen are a group of buttons and the QWERTY keyboard. The buttons include left and right selection keys, Talk and End buttons, Menu shortcut, e-mail launch and a four-way navigation joystick. The left side of the phone is where three buttons are located for Volume Up, Volume Down and Voice record. Also in the left side, but is located behind the battery cover, is the miniSD expansion slot. Unfortunately, no camera is included in this business-centric device. The Nokia E62 is powered by the Symbian OS 9.1, Series 60 third edition. It supports viewing and editing of Microsoft Word, Excel and even PowerPoint documents, which is a very rare feature for smart phones.

A Screen Export function is also included that allows the display of the E62′s screen via a compatible projector. It also works with Adobe Reader and Zip Manager. Built-in memory is 75MB but the help of the miniSD slot can extend it to 2GB. E-mail capabilities with the Nokia E62 are very impressive. It supports Microsoft Exchange Server, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP accounts. It can also view attachments of popular formats like word, excel and jpeg. Real-time message delivery is attainable with push e-mail solutions. It also supports instant messaging such as Yahoo and AOL. New messages alerts are in the form of a pop-up box and LED.

Among the connectivity capabilities of Nokia E62 are Bluetooth, quadband GSM/GPRS, 3G and infrared. Just like the Nokia E61i, the Bluetooth isn’t limited for hands-free handsets but can be used for file transfers as well. The smartphone can also act as a modem for laptop. There is no Wi-Fi but connecting to the Internet is possible with GPRS. The 3G, on the other hand, can speed up data transmission whether the data are text, video or music.

Phone capabilities with Nokia E62 offer speakerphone, speed dial, and voice commands and VoIP calls, just like the E61i. Multimedia capabilities include music player, Image Viewer and RealPlayer. As mentioned above, there is no built-in camera for this model. The most important thing is that, all of the features above worked great and Nokia E62 ranked among the most dependable smartphones in the market today.

Joining Nokia’s E Series, a group of phones that is dedicated to satisfy every corporate user’s needs is Nokia E61i. Users have started praising Nokia E61i’s innovative design and its excellent messaging and productivity capabilities.

Nokia E61i’s mocha-brown and silver body sports a dimension of 4.6 x 2.7 x 0.5 inches and a weifhr of 5.3 ounces. The E61i is heavier as compared to other Nokia smartphones as caused by its solid construction and a wider body. The 2.8-inch screen runs 16 million colors at a 320 x 240 pixel resolution that makes viewing text, images and videos at best. Backlighting, contrast and themes can be adjusted automatically or manually.

The navigation keys and the QWERTY keypad are located below the screen. Among the navigation keys are the standard Talk and End buttons, two soft keys, and menu shortcuts. Two quick-launch buttons are also added; one will direct to the contacts and the other one can be programmed by the user to go to any applications. The traditional five-way navigation toggle replaced the joystick controller. The QWERTY has more spacing and most of the keys are large and square in shape.

This is an improvement as the rubbery keyboard prevented any slips that limit away frustration to the act of typing text messages and e-mails. On the left portion of the phone is the voice recorder and volume control. On the backside are the camera lens, mirror and flash. The microSD slot is behind the battery cover on the left side.

The E61i runs under the Symbian OS 9.1, Series 60 third edition. Users are able to view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point documents via the Quickoffice Suite. An additional utility is the Nokia Team Suite that can be used for creating teams, members, conference call numbers, conference call PINS and web pages for finding all the information about a single conference calls. Adobe Reader and Zip Manager are also included in the smart phone. Completing the list of tools are calendar, clock, voice recorder, currency converter and calendar. The default memory is 50MB but the microSD can accept up to 2GB of memory.

Nokia E61i ‘s support Microsoft Exchange Servere, POP3, IMAP and SMTP accounts. An attachment viewer is also included. Push e-mail solutions allows real-time messaging in E61i, supporting Intellisync Wireless E-mail, BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Visto, and Seven Always-On Mail. It works with instant messaging clients like Yahoo and AOL as well. Another cool feature, the Message Reader, automatically converts the text messages to speech.

Connectivity features with E61i are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and Infrared. Bluetooth can be used for file transfers and dial up networking for laptops, aside from hands-free handsets. Phone capabilities in E61i is fantastic as it offers the world roaming, speakerphone, speed dialling, voice commands and conference calls. It also supports VOIP calls.

There are two 6500 handsets that were launched by Nokia. One is the 6500 classic and the other is the 6500 slide. The 6500 Classic is the direct successor of the Nokia 6300, embodying the super-slim mobile phones in the tradition of Motorola RAZR V3. While some users have criticized Nokia 6500 Classic for paying more attention on the design, it showed that the focus has paid off as it became the slimmest Nokia phone at 9.5 mm thin.

This sleek and sophisticated-looking phone has a 320 x 240 pixel LCD display in a dimension of 109.8 x 45 x 9.5 mm and weighs 94 grams in black and bronze aluminum casing. It also features an average-sized alphanumeric keypad with buttons separated with strip of silver bars. These buttons are easy to press even in the dark especially that it is well-lit in white, contrasting the dark color scheme of the handset. Only one port is developed for the micro-USB socket and headset. This unifying move may have been an advantage for the aesthetics but it sacrificed the possibility of multi-tasking. On the back side of the camera are the 2.0 Mega-pixel camera, LED flash light and speakers. Nokia 6500 classic’s 2.0 Mega-pixel camera may not fair accordingly with other camera phones.

Image quality is poor, although the LED light can provide improvements when used in dark environment. One of the achievements of 6500 is the inclusion of the 3G, although it still lacks video call support. This quadband smartphone supports the following network types: GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900. Aside from the 3G, it also offers GPRS, Java, Bluetooth, A2DP and USB connectivity options.

Multimedia capabilities of Nokia 6500 Classic include a media player that support AAC, eAAC+ and MP3 formats and some videos, although there are no FM tuners. The media player can sort tracks by play lists according to artists, albums, genres and has the following playback options: shuffling, repeating, stereo widening and equalizer customizing. Games in 6500 Classic are Golf Tour, Rally 3D, Snake III and Sudoku. A user who will buy this unit must expect the following in the package: stereo headset, charger, battery, micro-USB connectivity cable, user guide, contemporary leaflet and CD-ROM.

While a number of users might get disappointed with the limitations of Nokia 6500 classic, some will still fall in love with such a beautiful gadget. The elegant design can easily slide over its shortcomings.

One big difference between the two Nokia 6500 that were released in 2007 is on the design. The Nokia 6500 classic was boasted as the slimmest Nokia unit on its release, sporting 9.5 mm thinness. The Nokia 6500 Slide, on the other hand, may appear bulky at first glance as compared to its namesake, but its more futuristic look of a merged steel body and clean outline positioned itself more on the battle of aesthetics. The 6500 Slide also won in the features side, as it now features a 3.2 Mega-pixel Carl Zeiss camera.

There’s number of praise with the Nokia 6500 Slide as it has been judged as one of the best Slides in the market. This silver-colored smartphone sports a 2.2-inch LCD screen and a dimension of 96.5 x 46.5 x 16.4 millimeters and weighs 125 grams with the battery in it. The unit is very well-crafted, even the key pads and battery cover. The control keys and alphanumeric keypad are large and well-spaced, and pressing them won’t raise any complaints.

The top portion of 6500 Slide is where the micro-USB port, 2.5 mm audio connector charging port and a release catch for the battery cover are located. Beneath the battery cover is where the microSD expansion card slot is hidden. There is no need to remove the battery in order to swap cards.

Some of the features that are lacking in the 6500 Slide is the multitasking Java applications, which means that only one Java application can be opened at a single time. It also includes the unified message editor, which can able to detect whether the message is SMS or MMS easily by detecting whether a multimedia file such as image or music is included in the message, and multimedia player. More shortcuts are displayed in the Home page, but this may look cramped up, so a disable option is also included. The music player (or more appropriately, a multimedia player) can also play videos and has a number of add-ons like equalizer, playback options and stereo-widening. A built-in FM radio is also included.

The Nokia 6500 Slide’s Carl Zeiss camera is definitely treat among photo aficionados as it embodies a camera resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels for still images and 640 x 480 pixels for videos but it lacks the backlight adjustment feature. Taking pictures in external locations might appear to be washed out in some occasions as there are no options to adjust the camera’s brightness level. Although it doesn’t match up with the features of other camera phones, it remains a very commendable camera to use.

Connectivity with Slide includes a quadband GSM/EDGE radio, dual-band UMTS, Bluetooth with A2DP support and TV-out option. Nothing should be worried about the quality of audio calls as they are superb.

The ever-growing and evolving mobile technology has been trying to surpass every mobile unit out in the market and offer something new, with the goal of advancing each new product release an innovative functionality and slowly stuffing out all the features of the bulky personal computer into one small mobile phone. With this emerge the popularity of such mobile havens like the Blackberry which gave rise to the popularity of pocket e-mail. Recently, Motorola has introduced what others have been declaring as Blackberry’s competitor, the Motorola Q9h. Just like other Motorola phones, the Q9h is well-known for its style and design, sporting a slick slim look. It was formerly known as Q Q9, a 3G HSDPA GSM phone but with a few change and improvement in specifications, it was then renamed into what it is more popular name.

With dimensions 4.64″ x 2.63 x 0.46 inches, Q9h is slightly slimmer than the Black Berry, but is heavier at 134 grams. Equipped with a spacious QWERTY keyboard, the Q9h is one great text messaging device. The keyboard of the Q9h has been hailed as one of the market’s best as typing has been a very convenient task to do with it. It can send text messages and MMS as well, and it also includes the predictive text entry feature. Its lithium ion battery is impressive for standing the test of time at 480 hours or 20 days (standby time) and 6.5 hours (talk time).

This slim Windows Mobile smart phone is very distinguishable with its landscape-oriented display, the larger width making it a more convenient tool for texting and Internet browsing. The colored LCD display has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and has 65, 536 colors. Q9h’s 2.0 mega pixel camera features fixed focusing and an LED flash. You can also capture video clips at a resolution of QVGA (320×240 pixels. The phone also includes a music player that supports MP3, AAC, WMA and MPEG4 and video streaming as well. It also includes GPS navigation. And just like other smart phones, the Q9h also offers the following tools: alarm, calculator, calendar, To-Do list and voice recorder.

Q9h is a quad-band GSM that makes it work in networks on any continent. It 3G support on the other hand is limited depending on the version. It’s just a shame that Q9h doesn’t have WiFi or wireless LAN. The phone has Bluetooth and can support HFP, A2DP, AVRC and other list of profiles. It can also play Java applications. One can visit the Internet via Opera 8.6 web browser. And unlike other Windows Mobile 6 phones, Q9h is equipped with “Documents To Go” applications instead of the Microsoft Mobile Office applications which is used to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files although they are not that good as compared with the Mobile Office.

As long as performance is at stake, the Q9h can be a commendable one, both as a computer and phone although it has been flunked by other users for the lack of WiFi. The only sure thing is that, Q9h is the phone that emerged as a rival for the BlackBerry phones.

Motorola i930 is one of the two of the first iDEN smart phones released by Motorola. The Motorola i930 brings in almost the same features brought by its predecessor, the Motorola i920, only to include a built-in camera, to the delight for photo aficionados, which has actually been a basic feature among usual smart phones in the market. The i930 has been considered an underrated gadget, as it has shown that many are still under the tail of the more established smart phones, without realizing the i930’s potential power.

Lovers of the Motorola i930 have focused much on the advantage of it being an all-in-one mobile device, wrapping up essential functions like messaging, calendar, media player, recorder, calculator, alarm clock, camera, contacts list, notes and a lot more in one package. Although its interoperability lies mainly for sandwiching iDEN, WiDEN and GSM in one, and this seems to invite executives and businessmen who would most likely prefer to have a single number wherever they are located in the world and use it anytime.

Although much has been talked about i930′s poor battery capabilities, Lithium Ion with a standby time of four days and a talk time that lasts to 2.75 hours, there’s a lot of praise behind its magnificent features, much of which is a replica to that of the little earlier i920.

This clamshell phone has dimensions of 3.46 x 1.93 x 1.18 inches or 88 x 49 x 30 mm and weighs 5.9 oz. It has a retractable antenna, a 2.5 mm headset jack as well as side keys. The camera, which has been absent from the prior model, is one such feature for i930, with VGA LED flash which outputs are greatly displayed on the phone’s colored TFT LCD display with 16-bit 65,536 colors and a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. A second display is also included in the front, with 4,096 colors and a resolution of 96 x 65 pixels. Video streaming and music player is also included in i930, a surely important feature for multimedia enthusiasts. It supports MP4, H.263, WMV formats for video and MIDI, WAV, AU, VSELP, AMR, MP3, AMBE, WMA formats for music in Windows Media Player.

Data messaging proves to be i930′s forte as it includes Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS), SMS, MSN Messenger and POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 e-mail clients. It also features Predictive Text Entry function that allows users to enter text by pressing only one key per letter. This smart phone, with a built-in 64 MB and additional SD memory slot, is powered by Windows Mobile Standard, 2003 Edition operating system, another common criticism for not using the more upgraded Windows Mobile 5.0. It has a 180 MHz processor and a 32MB separately allotted for RAM and ROM. It can also be connected through a main computer via the USB port and through the Internet with WAP and the Pocket Internet Explorer. Just like the i920, i930 is criticized being not blue-tooth capable, although some would pass this as a minute mishap for i920, although such additional feature could have helped it rise above the mobile phone pedestal.

The HTC Advantage X7501 is a handheld computer that is also a mobile phone. It has a quadband GSM and a triband HSPDA for network connection and a great speakerphone for making calls if the user forgets their wired or Bluetooth headset. It measures 5.25 x 3.85 x 0.63 in inches and weighs 12.66 ounces.

Its transflective VGA screen is quite big at 5 inches and so are the icons and fonts on it, making reading, viewing and operating it with one’s fingers very easy. Users can also activate the VueFLO which enables users to scroll sideways when the Advantage is tipped to its side or vertically when it is tipped up or down.

You can use the Advantage like a slate tablet computer which makes both wide and tall orientation possible, or in a clamshell mode. The 3mm thin keyboard gets clamped to the Advantage with a magnet, which is so strong that credit cards and those with pacemakers must be kept at a certain distance. The keyboard also is used as the Advantage’s cover when carried around. The keys are well-spaced, large and sensitive enough for thumb typing if one needs to. The enter key, letters, space bar and other keys are in their standard places. There’s a control key for easy editing and four arrow keys that can also be used pulling the page up or down.

The power button can also put this PDA on sleep mode or turn the Advantage off. There’s a 3.5mm stereo headset jack, SIM card slot, speakers, VGA/USB host 1.1 port and a stylus. Owners can hook the Advantage up to a monitor or projector for doing presentations using Excel, PowerPoint and Word, or to a television.

The Advantage makes use of the Intel PXA270 processor at 624MHz with 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM. There is also 83MB of free RAM and a SDHC compatible miniSD expansion slot. These give the Advantage plenty of file space.

The Advantage has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection and runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition, with Acrobat LE, eReader, Internet Explorer, mobile Outlook, Office Mobile, Opera and Windows Media Player Mobile. It also has a 20-channel GPS. As a phone the Advantage’s call features and quality are better than most. It has call barring and forwarding, conferencing, smart and voice speed dialing and dialing over headset, even Bluetooth and car kit types.

X7501 also has a 3-megapixel camera with an auto-focus lens, 8x digital zoom and a flash. It takes 2048 x1536 pixel photos. It can also be used as a camcorder with audio saved as an MP4 file. The Advantage uses a 2200 mAh Lithium ion battery that allows 11 hours of MP3 playing or one whole day of business multimedia use.

A purchase of an HTC Advantage includes the unit, detachable keyboard, 3.5mm stereo headset with mic, brown leather case with magnet locking mechanism, manual and start guide, screen protector, software CD with ActiveSync, two stylus, USB sync and charge cable, VGA-out cable and world charger.

For those looking into moving light in this high-tech world, AT&T together with HTC America Inc. has introduced a 6-ounce smartphone that has all that anyone can wish for within its 2.3 in x 0.7 in x 4.4 in black frame.

The AT&T Tilt is a smartphone that can outdo the PDAs that are out in the market and practically replace your laptop. Owners can use it to make documents; send, receive and check voice, text, data and email (POP3 and IMAP4) messages; update personal web pages; browse photos; watch videos; listen to music or satellite radio; download music; take pictures and videos; including help in finding locations anywhere on earth.

As a wireless phone, it has an instant Push to Talk communication feature and the usual voice command and dialing. Users can bring it when traveling abroad because of its 3.6 Mbps tri-band (UMTS/HSDPA) and quad-band (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) features.

Owners can use voice and data functions as well as accessories all at the same time because this smartphone’s connection can combine up to six wireless pairings. Its 3rd party applications are over the top.

It comes with AOL®, Windows Live(TM) and Yahoo!® instant messaging. YouTube can be enjoyed by just downloading the streaming media player of HTC.

The operating system used is Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional that is Vista-compatible and uses a QUALCOMM 400 MHzMSM7200 processor enabling fast 3G wireless broadband connection. Aside from Microsoft Office Mobile that one needs to use Excel, Powerpoint and Word files and Outlook, it also has Active Sync to synchronize the AT&T Tilt with one’s PC.

For memory, it has an installed 128 MB of SRAM and 256 MB of Flash ROM. Memory can be expanded to its 2 GB potential with microSD. You can use this smartphone as an integrated, high-speed, wireless modem for your laptop. Aside from Bluetooth 2.0 it also uses IrDA and IEEE 802.11b as well as IEEE 802.11g integrated Wi-Fi. It has a USB port, expansion slot, and comes with a USB cable.

You can use AT&T Tilt’s features with ease because of it’s tilting colored touch screen (28” with 64K colors) complemented with a QWERTY keyboard that slides out. A scrolling or track wheel on the left side, five-way navigation button and stylus gives users choices by which one can comfortably manipulate the device. Users can customize the screen which has a maximum resolution of 240×320. For the audiophile, AT&T Tilt supports AAC, AMR, MP3, WAV, WMA, MIDI, AAC+ audio standards. It also has a built-in microphone and speakers.

Its three megapixel camera can take excellent pictures and videos with its autofocus capabilities and 10x zooming function. Although owners will have to make do without a flash.

AT&T Navigator is used by the built-in GPS to assist when traveling in unfamiliar area. AT&T Tilt lets you make use of other GPS applications like Garmin Mobile XT and Google Map, too. You can even geo-tag photos.

Its power is the only downside that can be said of this smartphone. But most people are willing to bear with its Lithium polymer battery’s need to be recharged almost daily for three hours. They know all the features they enjoy requires a lot of power.

An AT&T Tilt smartphone also comes with an AC wall charger, 1350 mAh battery and extra stylus.
